1950s typewriters

The 1950s is the peak of the postwar portable. Olivetti's Lettera 22 arrived in 1950 and the Studio 44 in 1952; Olympia built the SM3 (1953) and SM4 (1958) in Wilhelmshaven; Hermes launched the 3000 in 1958; and Smith-Corona's Groton-built 5-series, with the Silent-Super at the top, came in colours like Alpine Blue and Seafoam Green. Office standards such as the Olympia SG1 and Royal HH were at their best too. Machines from this decade are mechanically excellent and still widely serviced. Prices span a lot: a Smith-Corona Silent asked about $110–210 delivered on eBay in late 2026, an Olympia SM3 about $270–525 and a Hermes 3000 more.
