1960s typewriters

The 1960s brought refinement and then cost-cutting. Olympia's SM7 and long-running SM9 (from 1964) continued the SM line; Olivetti replaced the Lettera 22 with the Lettera 32 in 1963 and launched Sottsass's red Valentine in 1969; Smith-Corona introduced the Galaxie in 1960. Meanwhile IBM's Selectric (1961) began taking over the office, and portable makers increasingly turned to plastic trim and overseas factories as the decade went on. The best 1960s portables, such as the SM9 and Lettera 32, are among the safest buys today. In late 2026 Olympia SM9s asked about $250–430 delivered on eBay, Lettera 32s about $220–330 and Galaxies about $95–170.
