Standard typewriters

Desk-sized office machines, typically 30–40 pounds, often with interchangeable or extra-wide carriages and features such as decimal tabulators. The Underwood No. 5, Royal HH, Olympia SG1 and Adler Universal are the classics. They give a firmer, more stable typing feel than any portable and were built for all-day use, but they are loud, take up a desk, and are expensive and risky to ship. That shipping cost is why delivered eBay prices (about $150–580 in late 2026) are often far above what the same machine fetches at a local estate sale. If you can collect locally, a standard is one of the best-value typewriters you can buy.
