Noiseless typewriters

Noiseless typewriters use a mechanism developed by the Noiseless Typewriter Company and owned by Remington from 1924. Instead of flinging the typebar at the platen, a weighted linkage carries the type to the paper and presses it on, so you hear a soft thump rather than a sharp clack. Remington made Noiseless portables and standards from the 1920s to around 1950, and Underwood sold the same machine as the Noiseless 77. The trade-offs are a softer, sometimes faint impression, weak carbon copies, and a more complicated mechanism that fewer shops service well. In late 2026 Remington Noiseless Portables asked about $150–250 delivered on eBay, with serviced ones higher.
